Southern Prohibition hosts Hunger Run to feed the hungry

The Annual Hunger Run benefitting Extra Table has become a staple fall event in Hattiesburg, with even more promise to grow this year. In its fifth year, the run will take place in a new location in Downtown Hattiesburg.

Southern Prohibition is excited to announce they will be hosting the fifth annual Hunger Run at the brewery on Nov. 4. “We love working with Extra Table and The Thirsty Hippo year after year to raise funds and awareness for this worthy cause,” said Emily Curry, SoPro sales and marketing director. “Please join us downtown for this amazing day!”

Extra Table – founded by chef, author and restaurateur Robert St. John – is a locally-based non-profit organization committed to ending hunger in Mississippi by providing food pantries and soup kitchens with the nutritious food they need to feed Mississippi’s hungry. Through a partnership with Sysco – the nation’s largest food distributor – Extra Table uses 100 percent of donations given for food to purchase healthy food bundles from Sysco, which are delivered free of charge on a monthly basis to more than 30 food pantries and soup kitchens Extra Table is partnered with across the state.

“This event continues to grow every year, and we are thankful for evolving partnerships with businesses like Southern Prohibition and the Thirsty Hippo who care about getting healthy food to people in Hattiesburg who wouldn’t eat otherwise,” said Extra Table Community Coordinator Stacy Ahua. Local feeding agencies that are partnered with Extra Table include Edwards Street Fellowship, Christian Services and Petal Children’s Task Force.

Last year, the Hunger Run saw a record number of participants, with hopes to double that number this year. This year, the Hunger Run will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4. Participants are encouraged to sign up in advance in order to take advantage of discounted prices. Each participant in the race is invited to enjoy a free after party, which will include food and beer provided by Southern Prohibition.
