Distinguished Young Women: Petal

 

Eight high school juniors are seeking the title of Petal Distinguished Young Woman (formerly Junior Miss). Themed “Mississippi on My Mind,” the program will feature Jonathan Brannan as emcee, entertainment by the Petal Upper Elementary showchoir and 2018 Petal DYW Meagan Smith, who was named First Alternate to Mississippi’s Distinguished Young Woman at the State Program last summer.

Petal participants include:

Hannah Taylor is the daughter of Bob and Anita Taylor. She is a member of Soundsations and Innovations show choirs, Petal Harvey Baptist Church High School Lead Team, Interact Club and National Honors Society. She is an active member of Petal Harvey Baptist Church and enjoys spending all of her free time with friends and family. She plans to attend The University of Southern Mississippi and pursue a degree in nursing. Her talent is a vocal presentation of “You Matter to Me” by Sara Bareilles.

 Sydney Swafford is the daughter of Stacey and Leann Swafford. She is a three-year member of Soundsations and a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Interact Club and Redefining Beautiful Club. She is also a member of the Petal Varsity Volleyball Team. She plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in kinesiology, then pursue an advanced degree in physical therapy. For her talent, she will perform a vocal presentation of “On the Steps of the Palace” by Stephen Sondheim.

 Mallory Extine is the daughter of Billy and Renee Extine. She is a three-year member of the Petal Soundsations and a one-year member of the Petal Innovations. She is also involved in the Petal Ambassadors program and enjoys traveling and artwork in her spare time. She plans to attend William Carey University to major in psychology and pursue a career in psychiatry and criminology. Her talent is a vocal presentation of “Popular” by Stephen Schwartz

 Ainsley Wesson is the daughter of Barry and Shelia Wesson. She is an active member of Petal Harvey Baptist Church and enjoys cooking, photography and coaching Upward basketball. She plans to attend Jones County Junior College. Wesson will perform a patriotic poetry presentation for her talent.

 Quay Robinson is the daughter of Jeff and Genna Robinson. She is a member of the Petal Varsity Volleyball and Petal Fast Pitch Softball teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club and Spanish Honor Club. She is an active member of Petal Harvey Baptist Church and enjoys reading and traveling. Quay plans to attend The University of Mississippi and pursue a career in medicine. She will perform an original monologue for her talent.

 Myla Cox is the daughter of Tamikia Hartfield and Markus Cox. She is a member of the Petal Varsity Girls Basketball and Varsity Volleyball teams. She is also a member of the Beta Club and Lu Alpha Theta. In her spare time, Myla enjoys reading, writing and playing basketball. She plans to play basketball at a Division I school and pursue a career in engineering. 

Hailey Morgan is the daughter of Charley and Kim Morgan. She plays flute in the Petal High School Marching Band and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is an active member of Petal First Baptist Church and enjoys playing the piano in the Youth Praise Band. She plans to attend William Carey University and pursue a degree in music education. Hailey will perform Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Franz Liszt on the piano for talent.

 Kaitlyn Stout is the daughter of Christy Stout and Kelly Stout. She is an active four-year member of the Petal High School Speech and Debate Team. She enjoys volunteering at the Summit Church and helping others as much as she can. In hopes of pursuing a career in psychiatry, Kaitlyn hopes to attend Vanderbilt University and eventually attend medical school. For talent, Kailyn will perform a spoken word lyrical verse excerpt from Hamilton.
