The WUSM Round for Southern Miss Radio will take place Monday, April 24, at the Timberton Golf Club in Hattiesburg. The radio station’s largest fundraiser, and one of its most-loved events, the golf tournament brings together a wide range of individuals and businesses in order to raise much-needed funds, while having a great time.
Not only is WUSM 88.5 FM the only community radio station in the Pine Belt, but is also seen by many listeners as the station with the most unique voice.
This year’s event chair, Lewis Myrick Jr., discussed the impact the station has had on his life in a letter to potential sponsors:
“WUSM has always been eclectic when it comes to music selection. I’m very thankful that it matured me, that I didn’t have to listen to the same songs every hour, that I was introduced to new music.”
While WUSM strives to play the best music ever recorded, it also takes pride in being a strong community partner. The station’s mission states, “It is both the mission and a legal responsibility of WUSM – FM 88.5 to serve its community.
“The station was established to facilitate, support and enhance the University’s mission of teaching, training and service. It was also designed to support the activities and programs within the University, local non-profits and the needs of its listeners, volunteers, supporters, sponsors and underwriters. It is a Public Radio Station, whose design is to engage and include students in all areas of station operations.”
The golf tournament is sponsored by American Graphics and the Forrest County Board of Supervisors, which gives those involved at the station the opportunity to spend the day with the people who make a difference by sponsoring, playing or volunteering at the event.
This year, registration kicks off at 11:30 a.m. with lunch sponsored by Cooperative Energy and Keg & Barrel and live music by Scott Chism and the Better Half sponsored by Robert and Dana Simmons.
Players will tee off at 1 p.m., and during their round will have a chance to win $15,000 in cash sponsored by Newk’s Eatery, The Hattiesburg Area Homebuilders and John W. Lee Jr.
Players will also have a chance to compete for $10,000 off a new Infiniti, sponsored by Herrin-Gear Infiniti of Jackson, as well as a chance to compete for a shot at $1 million in the Fiesta Bowl Million Dollar Hole-in-One Challenge final round.
The 19th Hole will be open all day for players, sponsors and guests and is sponsored by Southern Beverage, Fine Wine & Liquor Loft and Hattiesburg Coca-Cola. The day’s activities will end with a crawfish boil sponsored by Battery World and Triangle Seafood.
