Alumni Association Announces Homecoming Activities

The University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association has announced festivities for Homecoming 2017 are scheduled Oct.  9–14. The Golden Eagle football team will battle the University of Texas at El Paso at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct.. 14, at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

A highly-anticipated university tradition, Homecoming at Southern Miss includes activities that begin as early as Monday and continue through the weekend highlighting all areas of campus.

“Homecoming at Southern Miss serves as an invitation for all Golden Eagles to return home to their alma mater,” said Jerry DeFatta, executive director of the Southern Miss Alumni Association. “We look forward to welcoming alumni to campus for an experience that encourages and renews their commitment to Southern Miss.”

Golden Eagle alumni and fans are encouraged to visit for a full list of Homecoming festivities taking place across campus and throughout the Hattiesburg community. Golf Tournament
The 19th Annual Alumni Homecoming Scholarship Golf Tournament is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, with a shotgun start at the Hattiesburg Country Club. Priced at $150 per player, all proceeds benefit the Alumni Association’s Robert D. Pierce II Legacy Fund, which provides scholarships for select children and grandchildren of alumni.

Hall of Fame
This year, the Southern Miss Alumni Association will induct six into the Alumni Hall of Fame during its annual banquet held Friday, Oct. 13. The banquet and ceremony will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Thad Cochran Center on the Hattiesburg campus, and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Limited seating is available to the general public. All-inclusive tickets for the event are available for $50, and may be purchased by contacting the Alumni Association at 601.266.5013. The 2017 Hall of Fame inductees include Rich Corsetto ’71; Donald R. Cotton ’68, ’71; Mary S. Graham ’86, ’88, ’94; Larry Harrington ’80; Greg R. Strahan ’75; and James H. Thompson Sr. ’58.

Centennial Scholarship Celebration
In 2017, the Association awarded a record number of 100 Pierce Legacy Scholarships to incoming freshmen as part of its 100-year anniversary. These students, along with past recipients of the Pierce Legacy Scholarship, will be recognized during a Centennial Scholarship Celebration and Business Meeting at noon Saturday, Oct. 14, at the  Thad Cochran Center Ballroom.

“As an Association, we cannot think of a better way to celebrate our century of service to the University than by contributing to the success of future Golden Eagles,” said Jerry DeFatta, executive director of the Southern Miss Alumni Association. “Since its establishment in 1999, more than 95 students have been named Pierce Legacy Scholars, with 13 students being honored with the award in 2016.
