2017 Debutantes

A Debutante Ball will be held at the Hattiesburg Country Club following the presentation. The association started in 1952 as the Junior Cotillion of Hattiesburg and is celebrating its 65th season this year. The 2017 debutante officers are: President Holleman St. John, Vice President Margaret Campbell, Secretary Maria Enger, Social Chair Macy Mitchell, Publicity Chair Peyton Dorsey, Decorations Co-Chairs Ann Louise Whitehead and Olivia Bridges and Historian Gabrielle Graham, executed this year’s celebrations.

The debutantes to be presented:

Eden Blair Buys is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Louis Buys of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Winston Robbins of Columbia, and the late Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Buys of Vicksburg.

Buys is a sophomore at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she is majoring in public relations with minors in marketing and communications. She is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, a Luckyday Scholar, the Eagle Club and the Baptist Student Union.

She will be presented by her father, John Louis Buys, and escorted by Andrew Mills Boyd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lee Boyd of Hattiesburg.

Hannah Taylor Cox is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Blake Conn of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Conn of Greenville, S.C., Cathy Conn of Hattiesburg, Tamra Thomas of Hattiesburg, and the late Gregory Buchanan of Columbia.

Cox is a sophomore at Mississippi State University, where she is majoring in biochemistry. She is a member of Phi Mu Sorority, MBDMI Missions Volunteer, a President’s List scholar and a former MSU co-ed cheerleader.

She will be presented by her father, Richard Blake Conn, and escorted by William James Robinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Robinson of Hattiesburg.

Caroline Elizabeth Duff is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Duff of Hattiesburg.  She is the granddaughter of Bobbie Duff of Hattiesburg and the late Ernest Duff, Montez Cole of Hattiesburg, the late James Cole of Vicksburg and the late Jack Cole of Little Rock, Ark.

Duff attends the University of Mississippi, where she is a liberal studies major. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, an Ole Miss Ambassador and a member of Campus Crusade for Christ. 

She will be presented by her father, James Duff, and escorted by Thomas Grant Wichman, son of Mr. and Mrs. John and Sharmon Wichman of Hattiesburg. 

Madison Kate Dyar is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max E. Dyar Jr. of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Don Hinton of Laurel and the late Linda Hinton, Max and Rita Dyar of Hattiesburg and Jack Moss of Seminary. 

Dyar is a sophomore at the University of Alabama, where she is majoring in biology. She is a member of the Honors College, Delta Delta Delta Sorority, is a Panhellenic delegate and a member of B+ Foundation.

She will be presented by her father, Max E. Dyar Jr., and escorted by Ryan Pitalo, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Pitalo of Bay St. Louis.

Arienna Brie Dyess is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Grant Dyess of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glynn Dyess of Carson, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Helberg of Hattiesburg and Mr. and Mrs. Winfrey Smith of Brandon.

Dyess is a sophomore at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she is majoring in kinesiology and exercise science. She is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, a recruiter for Southern Miss Football office, Eagle Club and the Southern Miss Alumni Association.

She will be presented by her father, Marshall Grant Dyess, and escorted by Jacob Roberts Sumrall, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lafayette Sumrall Jr. of Soso.

 Hannah Ryan Flathau is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Flathau of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Hudlow of Ocean Springs, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert and Mary Ruth Jones of Vicksburg and the late William Flathau. 

Flathau is a sophomore at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she is majoring in interior design. She is a member of Kappa Delta sorority, a Greek and President’s List scholar and an Eaglethon ambassador. 

She will be presented by her father,  Jeffrey Flathau, and escorted by Chandler Nathan Laudenheimer, son of Mark Laudenheimer and Mari Allison Freeman of Hattiesburg.

Mary Morgan MacFarlane Gratwick is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hutchinson MacFarlane Gratwick of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Kenneth Graham McCarty of Hattiesburg.

Gratwick is a sophomore at the Mississippi State University, where she is majoring in biological sciences. She is a member of Chi Omega Sorority, Lambda Sigma National Honor Society, MSU Pom Squad and served on the Student Affairs Public Relations Committee.  

She will be presented by her father, John Hutchinson MacFarlane Gratwick, and escorted by Andrew David Burnham, son of Tracy McMahon Burnham of Hattiesburg and the late Dr. William Darrell Burnham. 

Karlie Elise Hall is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Loewer Hall of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Welborn of Laurel and Mr. and Mrs. James Hall of Hattiesburg. 

Hall is a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, where she is majoring in nursing. She is a Luckyday Scholar, a member of the Chancellor’s Leadership Class, Delta Gamma Sorority and National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

She will be presented by her father,  Jeffrey Loewer Hall, and escorted by Chase Alexander Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Johnson of Hattiesburg.

Julianna Claire Harris is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cecil Harris IV of Sumrall. She is the granddaughter of Quentin Francis Sagdahl of Tullos, La., and the late Mary Ann Sagdahl and Patricia Bullock Harris and the late Elmer Cecil Harris III of Mobile, Ala.

Harris is a sophomore at the Mississippi State University, where she is majoring in mechanical engineering. She is a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, Sigma Alpha Lambda National Honor Society, MSU Honor Society and is an Academic Excellence Scholarship Recipient.

She will be presented by her father, Elmer Cecil Harris IV, and escorted by James Hayden Zeigler, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Anthony Zeigler of Hattiesburg.

Kerry Camille Helveston is the daughter of Dr. Wendell Raymond Helveston and Kerry Love Davis, both of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. S. Kimble Love of Hattiesburg, and Emily Black Helveston of Hattiesburg and the late Raymond Eugene Helveston.

Helveston is a sophomore at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she is majoring in pre-medicine. She served on the USM Project Research Team, Special Olympics and is a member of the Association for Rights of Citizens with Disabilities and First Presbyterian Church.

She will be presented by her father,  Wendell Raymond Helveston, and escorted by William Charles Felsher, son of Edwin Felsher of Gulfport and Laura Chain Felsher of Hattiesburg.

Haydn Clare Johnson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Wayne Johnson of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Francis Skrmetti of Hattiesburg and the late Mr. and Mrs. Lavon Brancey Johnson of Hattiesburg. 

Johnson is a sophomore at the Mississippi State University, where she is majoring in public relations. She is a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and a President’s List scholar.

She will be presented by her father, Terry Wayne Johnson, and escorted by Tatum Reid Cave, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lee Cave Jr. of Hattiesburg.

Mary Franklin McCarthy is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Richard McCarthy of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of the late Richard and Dorothy McCarthy of Columbia, Rachel Williamson and the late Gary Douglas Williamson of Moselle.

McCarthy is a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, where she is majoring in accounting. She is a member of Chi Omega Sorority, Lamba Sigma Honor Society, the philanthropy committee for Chi Omega and a Dean’s List Scholar

She will be presented by her father, Dr. Richard McCarthy, and escorted by John Preston Andy, son of Dr. and Mrs. Orlando Andy of Hattiesburg.

Monica Lanzi Moreno is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Alvaro Moreno of Petal. She is the granddaughter of the late Dr. Alvaro Moreno and the late Mrs. Alvaro Moreno of Leakesville, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul A. Lanzi of Birmingham, Ala.

Moreno is a sophomore at Spring Hill College, where she is majoring in pre-medicine. She served as recruitment co-chair for Phi Mu Sorority, an NICU volunteer at USA Women & Children’s Hospital, is a member of the Dean’s List and the College Society of Leadership and Success.

She will be presented by her father, Dr. Alvaro J. Moreno, and escorted by Harrison Clark Hicks, son of Larry Clark Hicks Jr. and Kathia Simo Hicks, both of Hattiesburg.

Eden Alexis Pace is the daughter of Carlis Eric Pace and Stephanie Saulters Pace, both of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of the late Larry Glenn Saulters of Bassfield, and Julia Nanette Berry Saulters of Hattiesburg and John Alford Pace of Oloh and the late Lillian Lawanna Williamson Pace.  

Pace is a sophomore at the University of Alabama, where she is majoring in marine biology. She is a member of Phi Mu Sorority, the Dean’s List, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.

She will be presented by her father, Carlis Eric Pace, and escorted by Steven Harper Evans Jr., son of Stephen Evans of Wiggins and June Ann Evans of Daphne, Ala.

Jessika Tate Phillips is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Wayne Phillips of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Charles Phillips of Hattiesburg, Mr. and Mrs. James Thurman Hall of Columbia and the late Ronald Fleete Collins of Columbia. 

Phillips is a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, where she is majoring in social work with an emphasis in psychology. She is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, RUF (Rebels United in Faith) and CURE.

She will be presented by her father, Perry Wayne Phillips, and escorted by Chase Fulton Atkinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wade Atkinson of Hattiesburg.

Margaret Ann Phillips is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Preston Phillips of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Eugene Phillips of Canton, Mrs. Ernest Spivey Jr. of Canton and the late Dr. Ernest Spivey.

Phillips is a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, where she is majoring in pre-pharmacy. She is a member of the Sally McDonnell Honors College, Ole Miss Chancellor’s List, Phi Beta Sigma National Honor Society and Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. 

She will be presented by her father, Dr. Joseph Preston Phillips, and escorted by Jefferson Rush Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson Stewart of Hattiesburg.

Kristen LeAnne Pickering is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Billy Mack Pickering of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of the late Estus Lott and Earlean Lott of Purvis, and the late Billy Chain and Doris Chain of Collins.

Pickering is a sophomore at Mississippi State University, where she is majoring in kinesiology. She is a member of Kappa Delta sorority, is a Mississippi State cheerleader, a President’s List scholar, and a Civitan Camp volunteer.

She will be presented by her father, Dr. Billy Mack Pickering, and escorted by Justin Birge Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jefferson Birge Stewart of Hattiesburg.

Lauren Emily Pitts is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Lane J. Pitts of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of  Patricia Pitts of Laurel and the late Arthur M. Pitts, and Elsie Barrett of Fort Meade, Fla., and the late Calvin M. Barnett Jr..

Pitts attends The University of Mississippi where she is a pharmaceutical sciences major.  She is a member of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honor College, a School of Pharmacy Ambassador, a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and Gamma Beta Phi Academic Honor Society.

She will be presented by her father, Dr. Lane J. Pitts, and escorted by Dylan James Edwards, son of Mr. Chad Edwards and Mrs. Ginger Edwards of Brandon.

Helen Claire Schwartz is the daughter of Drs. Alan Christopher and Robin H. Schwartz of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Robert H. Hemeter of McComb and the late Liddell Hay Hemeter, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Leon Schwartz of Citronelle, Ala. 

Schwartz is a sophomore at the Mississippi State University, where she is majoring in English. She is a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Shackouls Honors College, Lambda Sigma Honor Society and is a President’s List Scholar.

She will be presented by her father, Dr. Alan Christopher Schwartz, and escorted by Jackson Gillespie Wilkins, son of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Gillespie Wilkins of Hattiesburg.

Mary Catherine Sobiesk is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Dolor Sobiesk of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Dean Richard of Lafayette, La. and Mr. and Mrs. George Adalbert Sobiesk of Lafayette, La. 

Sobiesk is a sophomore at the Mississippi State University, where she is majoring in finance with plans to attend dental school. She is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, Lambda Sigma Honor Society, and MSU’s Pre-dental Society.

She will be presented by her father, Dr. John Dolor Sobiesk, and escorted by Zachary Stuart Irby, son of Harold Stuart Irby and Angela Gracia Hogan, both of Hattiesburg.

Lillian Christine Thomas is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Otis Thomas III of Hattiesburg. She is the granddaughter of the Lillian Starnes Thomas of Collins and the late William Otis Thomas Jr., and Alice Louise Hull of Pascagoula and the late Findlay George Maier.

Thomas is a sophomore at Mississippi State University, where she is majoring in chemical engineering. She is a member of Phi Mu Sorority, a President’s List scholar, member of Society of Women Engineers and the Phi Mu Collegiate Advisory Committee. 

She will be presented by her father, William Otis Thomas III, and escorted by Peyton Harrison Morris, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Randal Morris of Hattiesburg.
